Why the island of Rhodes?

The island of Rhodes, the host of the FIDE World Amateur Chess Championships 2024, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe with beautiful sand beaches, lots of entertainment options and an incredible history going back tens of centuries!

Playing Hall

Rhodes has several nicknames, such as "Island of the Sun", "Pearl Island" and "Island of the Knights", named after the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, who ruled it from 1310 to 1522. The island is also famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Medieval Old Town has also been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Entry deadline

Registrations and bookings for the FIDE World Amateur Championships 2024 are possible until 9 September only through email worldamateur@fide.com to the appointed Local Organiser.


System of Play

The games will be held in 9 rounds as a FIDE-rated Swiss system.

The time limit for each player is 90 minutes for the whole game + 30 seconds increment for each move played, starting from move 1.


FIDE World Titles

The three (3) gold winners of the Open / Men sections receive each the title of:

• ”2024 World Amateur Champion” for the u-2300 section
• ”2024 World Amateur Champion u-2000”
• ”2024 World Amateur Champion u-1700”

The three (3) gold winners of the Women sections receive each the title of:

• ”2024 World Women’s Amateur Champion” for the u-2300 section
• “2024 World Women’s Amateur Champion u-2000”
• “2024 World Women’s Amateur Champion u-1700”
